Stats from 1:3* in the 2nd set excluding break/total points; number of aces & double faults valid for the entire contest

    Points won by each set: | X, X, 28-15, 35-27 |
Points won directly behind the serve (the last two sets):
    27 % Connors – 15 of 55
    18 % Vilas – 9 of 50

☆ The ninth and last meeting between these two 30-year-old left-handed players. Connors [2] edged the rivalry 5-4, it’s quite surprising that they didn’t play more matches spending over a decade together on tour as top players. In the US Open semifinal Vilas [4] was trying to play super conservative tennis, waiting on Connors’ errors. This tactics failed in the opener, but was successful in the 2nd set (Vilas got his only break to lead 3:1). Connors decided to slow down the pace and accelerate his serves – it worked out, he went through the last two sets being unbroken, yet he needed to play three ‘deuce’ games. That semifinal actually meant Vilas’ departure from the tennis elite after nine years of enjoying a constant position inside the Top 5 (never reaching the top though).

☆ Actually they met 10 times, but their Monte Carlo ’81 final was abandoned at 5-all due to persistent rains
