Points won by each set: | 37-36, 29-23, 47-41 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
16 % Connors – 17 of 106
17 % Barazzutti – 19 of 107
The first of two major finals of the second best Italian player (behind Adriana Panatta) born in the 70s. The following year he reached the French Open semifinal where he’d be destroyed by the best player at the time – Borg, winning just one game. Against Connors [1] in night session, Barazzutti [24] played a much more balanced match and had his chances in the sets he lost ‘5-7’. In the opener he squandered six break points at 3-all, in the 3rd set he was two points away from taking it after winning a crazy rally at 5:4* (15/30). Even though the serve wasn’t an important factor in that match, in the 3rd set there wasn’t a break point until 5-all… Extreme situation had taken place in the opener as Barazzutti was questioning the linesman’s call waiting for him checking the mark while Connors ran to the other side of the court and erased the mark (!) – Tony Trabert who was commentating that match, said he hadn’t seen anything like that for 41 years.
