A very similar match to the US Open ’99 quarterfinal where only one game (tie-break) was played more, but the match turned to be 48 minutes shorter (Auger plays on serve in exceptionally slow pace which always extends his matches). The Canadian [27] had defeated Zverev & Rublev in back-to-back matches, playing his best tennis, unseen at majors for almost four years, hence I expected him to beat De Minaur [8] rather easily. As opposed to the previous two matches where Auger raised the level of his backhand shots, against De Minaur he came back to the worse version of himself, especially as far as returns are concerned (he missed many 2nd serves off his much weaker wing). The crucial moment of the encounter came as De Minaur led *3:2 in the 2nd set – Auger removed his baseball cap (he wears it only when the Sun bothers him), and played his best game as a receiver to immediately break back with the help of three winners. He’s generally a more reliable player than De Minaur at tight moments, and he showed it at the end of three successive sets being 1-6-3 points respectively to lose them:
2nd set: De Minaur had a mini-set point at 5-all, but netted his FH off Auger’s second serve; in the tie-break the Australian led 4:2, had a set point at 6:5* – Auger responded with an ace 124 mph
3rd set: De Minaur played one of his best points at *3:5 (30-all) finishing it with a firm FH-volley, and a few minutes later led 30/0 on serve at 5-all, yet dropped two games in a row
4th set: De Minaur took a toilet break before that set, came back energised, he was more eager to express his positive emotions, led 5:2* and 6:5, but was unable to win two points in any of those games that could enter him to the decider; in an arrhythmic tie-break each player committed two double faults, but Auger was more stable from the back of the court, and converted his first match point attacking the net forcing a backhand error.
The tie-breaks he won 9/7 and 7/4, the match lasted 4 hours 10 minutes. “It was just a lot of nerves today during the whole match, it wasn’t pretty at all times, but that’s what Grand Slam matches are,” said Auger-Aliassime in his on-court interview. “Some days you won’t feel your best but I was willing to dig deep and do everything I can to stand here right now.” De Minaur finished the match with only 42% of 1st serves in – very bad for a grinder. He has now lost six major quarterfinals not playing a semifinal once.

Serve & volley: Auger 5/6, De Minaur 0
