  1. Voo de Mar says:
18 of 29 games included to stats (62%); number of aces, double faults and break points correct for the entire match

20-year-old Philippoussis [38] claimed his maiden title on his fourth final attempt (the previous three finals in 1995) to become just the third man in the Open Era to win a five round tournament surviving each match in a deciding set; his effort is more impressive given that in three matches he was on the verge of defeat (1-2-2 points away respectively… against his countryman Woodforde he survived on the fifth match point, earlier blowing a 6:3 lead in the deciding tie-break). In the final, facing Larsson [54] for the only time in his career, the young Australian trailed *2:3 in the decider when he won three straight games, and finished the match with two forehand winners holding at ‘love’. Philippousis had 18.0 aces per match in Toulouse that autumn week.

Philippoussis’ route to his maiden title (42nd main-level event):
    1 Fabrice Santoro 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1) – 1 m.p.
    2 Guillaume Raoux 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-4
    Q Hicham Arazi 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5)
    S Mark Woodforde 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(7)
    W Magnus Larsson 6-1, 5-7, 6-4
