Points won by each set: | 29-25, 25-31, 26-14 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
12 % Schalken – 9 of 75
21 % Lapentti – 16 of 76
The biggest title in Schalken’s career, it was the International Series Gold, an equivalent of ATP 500, also the only title among his nine with a 56-draw in which he needed six wins (he was seeded no. 12). At the turn of the century Schalken [51] was known as a player poorly dealing with tight scenarios (especially in Bo5) as opposed to his peer Lapentti [16], but in that match the Dutchman avoided a situation they were close the finishing line at the same time which would have strongly helped the Ecuadorian. The most important game of the final occurred at 4-all in the opener – the Dutchman created a triple break point, Lapentti won four points in a row, but having an advantage he was surprised by Schalken’s perfect backhand lob. The following week Schalken reached another final of the Asian swing, in Shanghai, that time losing to his peer, Magnus Norman 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. It snapped his career-best ten-match winning streak as well as a perfect 5-0 record in the ATP finals (2-1 in Challengers).
Schalken’s route to his 5th title:
1 Paradorn Srichaphan 7-5, 5-7, 6-2
2 Sergi Bruguera 6-4, 6-2
3 Cecil Mamiit 6-2, 6-2
Q Mark Philippoussis 6-3, 6-2
S Hicham Arazi 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(7) – 2 m.p.
W Nicolas Lapentti 6-4, 3-6, 6-1
