  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 26-21, 32-21, 32-21 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    29 % Edberg – 20 of 67
    20 % Gilbert – 18 of 86

A magnificent performance from Edberg [1] when he was at the peak of his tennis abilities for more than a year. There was a variety of service placement and perfect volleys (he missed just one easy volley) which was typical for him, but in that final his vulnerable forehand was also perfectly working. “I didn’t feel powerless, but he played very aggressively today,” the American said. “My serve was just not penetrating. His timing was good and I felt like I wasn’t doing anything out there. I could have played a better match.” He created his only break point being pretty hopeless at 1:4 in the 2nd set. Unfortunately it was their second one-sided final, the previous one occurred in Cincinnati 1990. During the presentation ceremony, Edberg cracked open a magnum bottle of champagne (photo) after giving it a stiff shake, but didn’t drink; he later said he’d allow himself only a glass of wine on holidays. Both finalists barely survived their matches a day before: Edberg was relatively close to lose his semifinal in successive sets to Ivanisevic (five and two points away) while Gilbert [25] trailed *2:4 in the 2nd set against Sampras, withstanding five mini-match points at 4-all, and six break points at 1-all in the decider (1-6, 7-5, 6-3).

Edberg’s route to his 32nd title:
    2 Peter Lundgren 6-3, 6-4
    3 Mark Woodforde 6-4, 6-2
    Q Michael Chang 6-4, 7-5
    S Goran Ivanisevic 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(5)
    W Brad Gilbert 6-2, 6-2, 6-2

☆ Edberg two points away from defeat to Ivanisevic in the deciding tie-break
