  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 31-24, 41-40 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    37 % Sampras – 25 of 67
    33 % Siemerink – 23 of 69

[26] Siemerink’s best Mercedes Super 9 event, he’d defeated i.a. Kafelnikov, Ivanisevic, and no fear to face Sampras [1] because they met just twice prior to that semifinal, and a few months before their Stuttgart encounter, Sampras barely outlasted Siemerink in Hong Kong under two hours (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 – in the no-break decider, Siemerink was serving second). Who knows, perhaps it would have been another three-set meeting if the Dutchman had won at least one of two long successive games in the 2nd set; he had a few game points to lead 3:0, but was broken after 7 deuces, in the following game there were 4 deuces after Sampras improved from 15/40. The best player in the world was playing backhand very well on that day, it actually made the difference.
