    48 % Becker – 35 of 72
    37 % Stich – 22 of 58

    An all serve-and-volley duel between the two best Germans of the 90s. Stich [3] seemed a better player before the tie-break, he led 2:1 (40/15), 3:2 (40/30), 5:4 (30-all). Becker [6] stole the tie-break 7/3 though, and got the only break leading 3:2 in the 2nd set. In both sets he showed his speciality – diving volleys: in the first set he made a BH-volley winner (picture), in the 2nd set he dived on match point with his FH-volley forcing Stich’s error.

    ☆ For the vast majority of the 1994 season, Stich was occupying places 2-5 in the ATP ranking,
    but poor results in the last three indoor tournaments pushed him away to No. 9, and he wasn’t allowed to defend his title at Masters.

    Comparison of his last three regular events in 1993 and 1994:
    1993: Stockholm – champion, Paris – QF, Antwerp – QF… record: 9-2
    1994: Stockholm – QF, Paris – 2R, Antwerp – 1R… record: 2-3
