    Points won by each set: | 34-20, 29-22 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    40 % McEnroe – 22 of 55
    9 % Connors – 4 of 44

It was a period when McEnroe [3] reached the highest level of operating his wooden “Dunlop” ☆ In 1982, he hadn’t won a title between February and September, but when he finally triumphed in California, he grabbed four titles in four events (besides he hugely contributed to the United States wins in the Davis Cup semi- and final ties) which helped him to finish the season as the best player in the world second year in succession, even though Connors [1] had won Wimbledon & US Open titles that year (McEnroe finished as runner-up and semifinalist respectively). In the 2nd set of their San Francisco final, McEnroe already led 3:0 with one break (he’d been broken only in his opening service game).

McEnroe’s route to his 36th title:
    1 Morris Skip Strode 6-1, 6-3
    2 Chris Lewis 6-1, 6-1
    Q Johan Kriek 6-1, 6-2
    S Eliot Teltscher 6-3, 6-4
    W Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-3

☆ Between San Francisco ’82 and Philadelphia ’83, McEnroe won 31 matches losing just 1,
but he decided switching to a graphite racquet (remained faithful to the “Dunlop” brand though)
