Points won by each set: | 35-41, 37-33, 35-27, 20-28, 48-41 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
34 % Cilic – 65 of 186
35 % Rublev – 56 of 156
One of the tightest French Open quarterfinals in history… In terms of the progress it was like a hardcourt or even a grasscourt match. Two guys who don’t like longer rallies and they wanted to prove who has a bigger forehand, the rallies were short so they had enough energy for serving very well over four hours. Just one break in each of the first four sets: Rublev [7] got breaks at 5-all and 4:3 in sets he won while Cilic [23] at 2:0 and 3-all in “his” sets. In the no-break decider played under floodlights, the Croat had a match point at 5:4, then at 5-all he faced a mini-match point – fired an ace. In the deciding tie-break Cilic played a sublime tennis: 7 winners including 5 clean winners (three aces, forehand, BH-volley). It lasted 4 hours 10 minutes, almost an hour shorter than DelPotro vs. Murray in which the total points won was almost the same! # First Roland Garros with 5th set tie-breaks (up to 10 points).
