  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 36-28, 9:5… |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    37 % Mayotte – 14 of 37
    34 % Connors – 14 of 41

After reaching the Wimbledon semifinal in 1982, Mayotte [20] was among favorites to the most prestigious title for the rest of the 80s, admittedly he never played another semifinal, but he triumphed in the second most important grass-court tournament at Queens, and he did it in impressive style defeating three multiple (in hindsight) Wimbledon champions in successive matches. “It isn’t the best way (to win),” said Mayotte, whose only previous victory came in the 1985 Lipton tournament (2-6 record in the finals at the time, he initiated in London a streak of 8 finals won in a row). “You don’t feel as happy as if you had to work till the last point.” Connors had sprained his right ankle in the semifinal, but began the final normally running; he felt the pain again winning a point after being broken in the 3rd game. The score was *2:1 (15/30) for Mayotte. Connors [6] was slightly limping afterwards, his second consultation with the trainer caused the decision to retire. Following his Queens triumph, Mayotte would reach the Wimbledon quarterfinal where he lost a dramatic 3.5h match (7-9 in the 5th set) to his nemesis Lendl.

Mayotte’s route to his 2nd title:
    1 Bill Scanlon 6-3, 6-3
    2 Mark Woodforde 6-2, 4-6, 6-2
    3 David Pate 7-6, 6-1
    Q Boris Becker 6-7(4), 7-6(7), 6-2 – 1 m.p.
    S Stefan Edberg 7-6(6), 6-1
    W Jimmy Connors 6-4, 2-1 ret.
