   Safin [25] was dictating the pace of the match until 3-all in the 3rd set when the lapse of concentration cost him defeat. Coria [4] advanced to his second consecutive Monte Carlo final after 1 hour 51 minutes. It was their first mutual encounter, six months later Safin took a revenge destroying Coria 6-1, 6-4 in Houston, and they never met again.
