  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 27-12, 42-35 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
    25 % Volkov – 14 of 56
    13 % Caratti – 8 of 60

The 24-year-old Volkov [23] after losing his first three finals, was a favorite to beat the local hero “wild card” Caratti [79], who could have been tired after 3-hour semifinal victory over Carl-Uwe Steeb. Volkov didn’t disappoint and won the final quite easily in 1 hour 20 minutes; it could be even faster but Caratti improved from 3:5 to 5-all (40/15) in the 2nd set… The 21-year-old Italian was a sensation in the first three months of 1991: he reached quarterfinals at the Australian Open & Key Biscayne, final in Milan and won a big challenger at Indian Wells to jump from No. 101 to 26 in a consequence of those results! Then he disappeared and reminded about himself with similar form actually just once as he defeated Michael Stich [2] in the quarterfinal of Basel ’94.

Volkov’s route to his maiden title:
    1 Cedric Pioline 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-4
    2 Eric Jelen 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2)
    Q Pat Cash 6-4, 6-4
    S Jakob Hlasek 6-4, 6-3
    W Cristiano Caratti 6-1, 7-5
