   It was the last ATP final between the two best players of the 90s, simultaneously their first match when they both were in their 30s. The scoreline actually reflected their level at the time; Agassi [3] still belonged to the best players in the world while Sampras [12] was struggling to win a tournament for more than a year. Sampras put some pressure on each Agassi’s service game in the opener, he led *4:2, but was broken at ‘love’, and afterwards the one year older American grabbed 10 out of 12 games avenging a final loss at the Mercedes-Benz Cup two years before. “I thought I served OK,” Sampras said. “I can get better. It’s still my weapon. This year, this week, it was a little spotty at times. It was like a pitcher not having his fastball every night. I didn’t have it every night, but well enough to get through some tough matches.” Quite unexpectedly, Sampras would win their last three encounters following that LA final.
