   # Comparing to their last year’s final, Medvedev won just two games more, but the opening set was much more intriguing this time. The Russian lost the toss, and chose a different side of the court after Alcaraz [2] had elected to receive. This rare decision paid off, and Medvedev [4] jumped to a 3:0* lead. In the tie-break he improved from *2:5 to 5-all, but then he missed a return off Alcaraz’s second serve which probably caught the line of the service box. Another forehand mistake (15-stroke rally) on set point, and Medvedev was unable to regroup in the 2nd set after much tougher match a night before (1-6, 7-6, 6-2 over Paul) which ended three hours later than Alcaraz’s semifinal. “Winning this tournament means a lot to me because the week before it began, I had a lot of doubts about my ankle,” Alcaraz said in his on-court interview. “I remember my first practice here was just 30 minutes with no movement and probably the first practice with really good tennis players was really tough for me, because I thought I was not going to play my best.” Alcaraz retired at the beginning of his previous event in Rio de Janeiro as he rolled his right ankle.
