Arantxa Sanchez [5 WTA] d. Pam Shriver [18 WTA]… 6-3, 6-3
The second edition of the experimental team event, featuring competitors of both genders, taking place in an indoor arena on the west coast of Australia. McEnroe had defeated Sanchez 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in their first meeting at the World Team Cup ’87, in Perth a similar match occurred but that time Sanchez dealt better with the finishing line. Actually McEnroe helped him to level at one set apiece. The American missed a backhand volley on mini-match point at 4:3 in the 2nd set from a position he was usually hitting winners. • In the 11th game he got the warning for a ball abuse, then facing a break point he got a point penalty for obscenity. Sanchez began the decider breaking with the help of three backhand passing-shot winners, but wasted a double break point at 2:0 and the things complicated for him at the end. He led 5:3* but nerves overwhelmed him, McEnroe couldn’t cope with them either, in the 11th game he was on the verge of another warning which would mean ‘game penalty’; ultimately the umpire was very tolerant, but McEnroe didn’t take advantage of it. In the last, longest game of the match, Sanchez wasted a match point, but withstood two break points and finished victorious… In the 90s, Sanchez lost five times in the fourth round at majors (a blow for a player at his level, who spent 6 years in the Top 20), twice being defeated by McEnroe in dramatic matches. McEnroe also won 2-1 their Davis Cup dead rubber in 1991, so five meetings between these two players, three in team competitions, and a deciding set was always required.
☆ From 1991 onwards, the format of the event was changed and mixed-doubles would be decisive instead of the female match as applied in the second edition
