  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 36-31, 44-40 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    29 % Stepanek – 21 of 72
    36 % Acasuso – 29 of 79

It was a great opportunity for both players to reach the biggest final of their careers (albeit Stepanek had played a match of this magnitude before with a positive outcome). Due to rain the semifinal must have been played under the roof which made it more intriguing because the lower ranked [30 vs 16] Acasuso was a more reliable clay-court player, but Stepanek was definitely better indoors which might have significantly helped him. It’s very rare that the opening game on clay is crucial, it was the case – Stepanek broke thanks to Acasuso’s errors, and went throughout the match being unbroken – Acasuso had his only BP chance leading 4:3 in the 2nd set; Stepanek survived a 16-stroke rally, the longest one and enjoyed it a lot (photo). In the tie-break there was 5-all when the Czech player got two straight points, and celebrated it on his back. It was their second & last main-level match (additional two in Challengers).

    Serve & volley: Stepanek 10/14, Acasuso 0
