  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 31-20, 47-45, 27-36, 37-29 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    24 % Kafelnikov – 34 of 137
    26 % Hlasek – 36 of 135

Another facet of [7] Kafelnikov’s talent unfolded. The 21-year-old Russian had won titles on hardcourts (outdoors, indoors) and on carpet, in Gstaad he claimed his first title on clay, the fastest clay in Europe, but still clay where the movement is different… One break decided about each set of that rain-interrupted final (two more-than-hour breaks), but the 2nd set was quite special – there were break points in five games in total (each of the finalists lost two games squandering break points). That tournament marked a turnaround in Hlasek’s career in its last phase. The 31-year-old Swiss was playing below his expectations in the years 1993-95, dropped to no. 124, the specter of Challengers loomed over him, he was pondering about retirement, and then in front of the home-crowd he stunned the upcoming clay-court specialists like Corretja and Rios; he returned to the Top 100 after Gstaad and spent there the rest of his career (1.5 years).

Kafelnikov’s route to his 6th title:
    1 Galo Blanco 4-6, 6-3, 6-2
    2 Vincent Spadea 6-3, 6-4
    Q Andrea Gaudenzi 6-1, 6-4
    S Sergi Bruguera 6-4, 6-3 ☆
    W Jakob Hlasek 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3

    Serve & volley: Kafelnikov 2/3, Hlasek 10/14

☆ Kafelnikov snapped Bruguera’s 18-match winning streak in Gstaad
