14 % Muster – 15 of 106
9 % Chang – 11 of 117
September 21-24, 1990; it’s a date of the biggest event in Austrian tennis history as Austria hosted the United States in the Davis Cup semifinal. The football Wiener-Stadion (renamed to Ernst Happel Stadium two years later) with capacity of 50K was modified to accommodate 17K local fans. Muster [7] – with the longest hair in his career – enjoyed this noisy atmosphere a lot, and defeated quite convincingly two young US superstars, Chang and Agassi. The match against Chang [13] it was the first rubber, played in an intermittent rain. Chang raced to a 2:0 lead, then he saved a triple break point at 2-all, and got a break leading 5:4. The rest it meant a big advantage of the five years older Muster, who had a lapse of concentration in the 4th set, but improved from 1:3 to *4:3, and held his last two service games at ‘love’. “It took me a while to get into the match, but I made the most important points and that’s all that counts,” Muster said. “I think I played some of my best tennis in the last three sets.” Muster gave his all in doubles, but his skills were limited (Austrians lost it 1-3), and the tie went to a fifth rubber in which Skoff led 2-1 in sets against Chang when the match was suspended on Sunday due to darkness. After the resumption on Monday, Chang broke Skoff’s serve 7 of 10 times to ultimately win 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 despite cramping in the last game.
