The biggest title in [9] Jarryd’s career (he was 25 at the time), but the circumstances were extremely beneficial for him. First of all he’d replaced injured Lendl, so it took any pressure away from him at the event’s inception, secondly he faced an injured opponent in round 1, thus instead of potential five sets (2:2 H2H against Tulasne at the time) he experienced a solid warm-up; afterwards he defeated his two compatriots easier than anyone could expect… two quarterfinals were played on Thursday, two on Friday, Jarryd took advantage not only of a day-off, he also played his semifinal during the day session while Becker his quarterfinal and semifinal in night sessions, they lasted more than six hours in total (7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 vs Edberg in the semis after 3.5 hours – their tightest & longest encounter in 35 meetings) – it caused that the German [4] entered the final being much more tired than his Swedish opponent, nevertheless Becker had defeated Jarryd in their four previous meetings, and it helped him to steal the 68-minute set despite Jarryd serving thrice to win it (5:1* he led)! Jarryd didn’t have a set point, the closest he was at *5:4 (30/0) – Becker struck a BH return winner. Becker didn’t implement his natural S/V style for indoor conditions, Jarryd realised physical problems of his opponent, therefore he didn’t attack the net either in order to wear him down, and the spectators were witnessing a bizarre encounter of two offensive players who were glued to the baseline. From the 3rd set onwards Becker was playing with a heavily taped right thigh (it prevented him from landing on his right leg while serving, his average 1st serve speed was a bit slower than the usual 2nd), but after losing eight straight games, he found his way to hold a few times in a row in the 4th set. There was 4-all (0/30) as the serving Jarryd won a point of the final despite Becker’s two dives. In the last game, Becker withstood three championship points, however, on the fourth time of asking – after nearly three hours of play – he made a casual BH slice error. Jarryd picked up $150,000, Becker received $80,000 as runner-up. “My injury isn’t why I lost,” Becker said. “Jarryd played a very good match. I gave it my best.” Jarryd analysed: “When I lost the first set after leading 5:1 it was a terrible feeling. After that, I just started playing point for point. Becker was tired. I think I had somewhat of an advantage with a day’s rest.”

Jarryd’s route to his 6th title:
    1 Thierry Tulasne 6-3, 4-0 ret.
    Q Joakim Nystrom 6-4, 6-2, 6-4
    S Mats Wilander 6-4, 7-5, 6-3
    W Boris Becker 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-1, 6-4
