Points won by each set: | 25-10, 66-57, 30-21 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
15 % Connors – 15 of 99
18 % Arias – 20 of 110
The fourth meeting between two Americans from different generations (Connors 12 years older), and for the first time the younger was unable to win a set. Given the history of their three previous meetings it was surprising how easily Connors [3] won the opener. The 2nd set was exceptionally long (7 of 12 games went to ‘deuce’), Arias [5] had a break point to lead 3:0, then he was saving set points at 4:5 and 5:6. After he lost the tie-break 5/7 he came back to his 1st set disposal. “That’s the first time I cramped in a couple of years,” Arias explained the decrease of his performance in the last thirty minutes. “I have had this problem when I play Connors. It just stuck in my mind. He hit two backhands which were called in. They were at least close, then in the next game, he hit one that was way long. I let them bother me in the first set. Before I knew, it was over.”
