   41 % Sampras – 27 of 65
   21 % Schuettler – 14 of 64

   Arguably [1] Sampras’ toughest match en route to the Cincy ’99 title, paradoxically against the weakest opponent he faced that week, at least at the time. The great American came back from a break down in both sets (3:5 in 1st, 2:3 in 2nd set), before comfortably winning the tie-break 7/2. Schuettler [49] showed good returning skills which helped him to elevate to a higher level a few years later during the transitional period when the courts were slowed down making the serve-and-volley style more difficult to perform.

   ☆ Three years later at Indian Wells, Schüttler plays for the second and last time against Sampras,
   even though the German is better and Sampras worse than in 1999, the American wins much easier 6-2, 6-4.
   Schüttler as a player whose career stretched over two different decades,
   met all the greatest players, but didn’t beat only Sampras. His H2Hs against them:

   Sampras 0-2
   Agassi 1-4
   Federer 1-3
   Nadal 1-5
