Points won by each set: | 38-31, 30-19 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
43 % Sinner – 26 of 60
41 % Atmane – 24 of 58
It’s a rarity that a player with such a small main-level experience as Atmane had, advances to the final stages of a big event. The 23-year-old Frenchman [136, qualifier] had just a 5-14 record at that level upon his arrival in Ohio, yet he managed to win five matches in Cincinnati’ main draw, eliminating two Top 10ers! And he played really well against the birthday-boy (Sinner just turned 24) in the opening set. He kept an excellent percentage of 1st serve in (78%) hitting the ball ferociously (with sporadic mixing of kick serves), but he began the tie-break committing the lone double fault, not risking his second serve. Sinner backed it up with two quick points and controlled to the end (7/4) obtaining the last point when Atmane’s return landed just beside the baseline. The best player in the world needed four deuces in the opening game of the 2nd set, and finally imposed his superiority breaking with ease at 2:1 and 5:2.
☆ One a half year ago, I was watching Atmane’s Slam debut at the Aussie Open, he lost to Medvedev 7-5, 2-6, 4-6, 0-1 ret. (exhaustion) and he seemed to be destined to become an ATP player soon, yet he needed to spend a lot of time at the Challenger circuit to finally break through. He has to play in the qualifying rounds at the US Open ’25, but afterwards he’ll be regularly participating in the main-level events for a year at least. Thanks to the Cincinnati’s semifinal he jumps to no. 69.
