The 23-year-old Medvedev [8] in form of his life – third straight final within three weeks and he wins the title after final defeats in Washington (Kyrgios) and Montreal (Nadal). Goffin [19] came back from 1:4 and 5:6 (15/30) in the opener, but in the tie-break he made a mistake close to the net, Medvedev got a point with a reflex volley to lead 4:2 and it was a crucial moment. He easily broke the Belgian in the first game of the 2nd set to focus on his own serve. At *5:4 (15/30) he lost a longer rally with poor dropshot, threw his racquet in anger, then saved the first break point with a second serve 123 mph winner, followed by three aces in a row (122-120-125 mph)! “It’s hard to find words,” Medvedev told Brad Gilbert after the match. “It’s the hard work I’ve been putting in. It would not be good to lose three finals in a row, so I’m really happy about this. I started cramping at 5:3, actually. It was the first time I cramped in three weeks. I made four serves he didn’t return and it was unbelievable.” In the semifinal vs Djokovic [1], he impressed me in the 3rd set – all of a sudden he decided to powerfully serve all the time: played 24 points on serve, 17 behind the 1st serve and among those 7 second serves he hit 3 aces & 3 double faults – held four times without any trouble. It’s his second win this year over the Serb (6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in Monte Carlo). “He’s super solid. He doesn’t miss. It’s like playing against a wall,” Goffin said. “Just playing cross, cross, wait for the ball. His pace is not too fast, not too slow. It’s quite a special pace to play against him. And then you receive bombs coming from his serve, and then he doesn’t miss.” # Medvedev has won the most 2019 matches on the tour… After the Djokovic semifinal, I thought he’d be No. 1 in the world.
