Points won by each set: | 28-36, 34-29, 33-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
25 % Sanchez – 23 of 89
10 % Agenor – 10 of 96
Just a week after defeating Agenor in the Gstaad final (6-2, 6-3, 7-6), Sanchez was again better in the tournament’s conclusion, again in three sets, but in France “the best of three” format obligated. The Spaniard [15] played the entire final attacking the net behind his 1st serve, in the decider – when the wind was blowing faster – Sanchez accelerated his first serves (at one junction he struck three aces in a row). Agenor [63] was seeking his maiden Grand Prix title (0-4 record in the finals after Bordeaux) and could have imagined himself as a potential champion leading 3:2* (40/15) in the 2nd set – Sanchez fought off the double break point quickly, the same as he was serving at 4:3 (15/40) in the 3rd set. Given that neither of the finalists was a big server, it’s quite astonishing that in the 32 games played, there were only three breaks of serve.
Sanchez’s route to his 5th title:
1 Roberto Arguello 6-1, 6-2
2 Jorge Bardou 6-3, 6-2
Q Thierry Champion 6-4, 6-2
S Gabriel Urpi 6-1, 6-2
W Ronald Agenor 5-7, 6-4, 6-4
