A new version of one of the first pic-stats I posted on my website in 2014 – the oldest final here excluding majors

    Points won by each set: | 37-27, 25-6, 35-41, 32-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    17 % Borg – 22 of 123
    18 % Panatta – 19 of 105

Adriano Panatta is the only man to beat Borg at the French Open. The Italian did it twice (!), the final in Bastad ’74 separated those two Borg’s defeats in Paris… In the 1st set, the 18-year-old Borg [8] saved a triple break point at 5:3 and it upset Panatta [26] very much – he lost 11 straight games in total (from *3:4 in 1st to 0:3* in 3rd). Borg was leading *6:5 (40/0) when the Italian saved the triple match point attacking the net on each occasion to win 12 out of 14 points. “This was a good victory,” said Borg, “but it will be more important to beat Panatta next week, in the Davis Cup tournament.” …Borg wins that DC rubber 6-4, 4-6, 9-7, 6-3. Ultimately their H2H is finished at 10-6 for the Swede. Apart from the multiple Slam champions, Panatta was toughest opponent for Borg along with Tanner.

Borg’s route to his 6th title:
    1 Fred McNair 6-3, 6-1
    2 Julian Ganzabal 6-3, 6-3
    Q Corrado Barazzutti 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
    S Onny Parun 7-6, 6-4, 6-4
    W Adriano Panatta 6-3, 6-0, 6-7(2), 6-3

☆ It was first of three finals won by Borg despite losing an MP-up set:
    Bastad ’74: Panatta 6-3, 6-0, 6-7(2), 6-3… 3 m.p.
    Boca Raton ’77: Connors 6-4, 5-7, 6-3… 3 m.p.
    Wimbledon ’80: J.McEnroe 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(16), 8-6… 7 m.p.
