Points won by each set: | 34-25, 35-26, 26-13 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
32 % Edberg – 25 of 77
12 % Bergstrom – 10 of 82
Christian Bergstrom is some sort of a Swedish enigma. He never won an ATP title (two finals, both in Adelaide, in both very close to the title), and never even reached the Top 30. A player like him would embrace one Grand Slam quarterfinal with open arms, but Bergstrom [62] somehow found his way to play three times in the last 8 of the biggest tournaments! # In the first round of the Aussie Open ’93 he stunned Ivan Lendl (6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4), later on in the 4th round after almost identical scoreline (6-4, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4) he ousted another seeded guy – Wayne Ferreira! I don’t know how to explain this phenomena, probably he was physically well prepared and felt himself much more comfortable beginning ‘the best of five’ encounters. Against Edberg [2], he kicked off with a 4:2* lead, but from that moment on, the older Swede hadn’t problems to break his opponent’s serve many times.
# Bergstrom three quarter-final defeats at majors: 1990 Wimbledon: Bergstrom [No. 98] l. Edberg 3-6, 2-6, 4-6 1993 Aussie Open: Bergstrom [No. 62] l. Edberg 4-6, 4-6, 1-6 1994 Wimbledon: Bergstrom [No. 112] l. Becker 6-7(5), 4-6, 3-6
