Points won by each set: | 45-41, 25-10, 40-32 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
23 % Mecir – 21 of 89
21 % Ivanisevic – 22 of 104
Beside Wilander, Chang, Becker and Agassi, Ivanisevic [300] was another player in the 80s who could be proud of reaching a Grand Slam quarterfinal at the age allowing him to still participate in the events for juniors. The Yugoslav was 17.4 when appeared on the tennis map advancing to the Aussie Open quarterfinal as a qualifier (the first qualifier in the last eight of a major since Acuna at Wimbledon ’85). He began it very well leading 3:0* (30/0) – the seven years older Mecir [13] was perhaps surprised with the service speed of the youngster. Ivanisevic reached the limit of his energy though after three “Bo3” qualifying matches and another four “Bo5” matches in the main-draw, all played in extreme heat. Between 5-all in the opener and *3:0 in the 3rd set, Mecir collected 11 straight games (three went to ‘deuce’), mainly thanks to very bad errors of Ivanisevic, who even missed two overheads standing comfortably at the net.
