Points won directly behind the serve:
    38 % Safin – 7 of 18
    22 % Ferreira – 8 of 35

Ferreira [59] waited seven years to play his another major quarterfinal, but the circumstances weren’t favorable to enjoy the moment; the Afrikaner had survived two super dramatic matches in succession (☆ Ljubicic 3:42h, A.Costa 4:10h) and when he was broken against Safin [11] at 1-all squandering seven game points, he took a medical time-out. After losing his serve for the second time, he decided to retire due to a stomach strain. He knew that without proper serving (his only shot affected by the injury) chances of winning another marathon against nine years younger opponent to whom had lost two previous meetings, under the scorching sun, were very slim and he didn’t want to aggravate his pain.

☆ Against Ljubičić, Ferreira saved a match point at 1:5* in the 3rd set to win 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 (!) making it the most extraordinary comeback at majors from two-sets-to-love-down in the Open Era; against Costa, Ferreira saved two-mini match points at 5-all in the decider to prevail 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 9-7…. on top of that he had a very tough four-set victory in the second round against an inexperienced Nalbandian
