Points won by each set: | 40-42, 33-28, 27-14 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
37 % Rafter – 36 of 95
30 % Larsson – 27 of 89
At the time it was quite surprising that Rafter [14] defeated Larsson [30] so easily (they had faced each other for the first time a few weeks earlier in Cincinnati, Rafter won it 5-7, 6-4, 7-5), but soon afterwards it was revealed that Rafter became the best classical serve-and-volleyer in the world (replacing Edberg) while Larsson lost arguably his last chance to play a major final (in the semifinal he could have played against Chang whom defeated in their two matches)… Very difficult conditions due to gusty wind and warmth, the opener was crucial. Rafter led 5:2* (40/15) then he trailed 5-all (15/30) before winning the tie-break 7/4. In the 2nd set he got a break at 3-all and from *1:2 in the 3rd set he collected five straight games with ease. Larsson was trying all types of passing-shots and lobs, but all in vain.
