  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 26-18, 28-22, 40-36 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    38 % Sampras – 37 of 95
    29 % Chang – 22 of 75

Sampras [1] saved a set point serving at *5:6 in the 3rd set (Chang’s FH volley error). If Chang [3] had won the match, he’d have dethroned Sampras as the leader of the tennis world (!) – a lifetime opportunity for the Chinese American who will be coaching Kei Nishikori during the US Open final 18 years later. “I knew I was the underdog once again,” said Chang, who also lost in the final of the Australian Open that year. “I didn’t feel a whole lot of pressure. I had a bit of nerves, I think. I think anyone would.” Sampras said. “I’ve never been a big believer in fate or destiny. I just feel you’ve got to go out and win. That is it. This year has been very difficult at times, on and off the court, and this really leaves me with a very happy thought.”

Sampras’ route to his 42nd title:
    1 Jimy Szymanski 6-2, 6-1, 6-1
    2 Jiri Novak 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4
    3 Alexander Volkov 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
    4 Mark Philippoussis 6-3, 6-3, 6-4
    Q Alex Corretja 7-6(5), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(7) – 1 m.p.
    S Goran Ivanisevic 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(9), 6-3
    W Michael Chang 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(3)
