  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 32-19, 34-26, 27-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    39 % McEnroe – 30 of 76
    27 % Wheaton – 24 of 87

Vintage McEnroe [20], he was as sharp as in the first half of the 80s when he triumphed in this event a few times. His brilliance, during that night session match, was especially visible until he led 4:2* (40/30) in the 2nd set. Wheaon [44] survived the seventh game, and his tennis significantly improved afterwards. He led 4:1* in the 3rd set; McEnroe removed his headband, and took the last five games. The fact Wheaton played a tough five-setter a day before (along with Annacone he defeated Spanish pair Bruguera/Carbonell 7-5, 6-7, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal), certainly didn’t help in terms of being fresh facing a super experienced 10 years older compatriot, who was playing in front of the supportive New York crowd.
