  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 27-21, 28-19, 35-30 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
    40 % Lendl – 29 of 71
    37 % McEnroe – 33 of 89

Excellent performance from the defending champion in the night session encounter between the two best players of the 80s. McEnroe [9] was especially hopeless between leading 3:2* in the 1st set, and trailing 1:3* in the 2nd, when he lost 21 consecutive points on Lendl’s serve! The Czechoslovak [1] was forced to play only one ‘deuce’ on his serve, it occurred in the 2nd game of the 3rd set. After that loss, McEnroe took a 7-month break for the second time in his career (previously in 1986), the first two months were strained by suspension for his behavior during a third round win over Zivojinovic at the US Open ’87… Lendl commented that McEnroe’s 1st serve was more tricky than at the times when the American had been the best player in the world, but his 2nd serve worsened.

    # Lendl’s three wins over McEnroe at the US Open (all in straight sets):
    1982 s-final: Lendl d. J.McEnroe 6-4, 6-4, 7-6… 2 hours 39 minutes… Total points: 110-97
    1985 final: Lendl d. J.McEnroe 7-6, 6-3, 6-4… 2 hours 28 minutes… Total points: 98-78
    1987 q-final: Lendl d. J.McEnroe 6-3, 6-3, 6-4… 2 hours 21 minutes… Total points: 90-70
