  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 28-22, 44-48, 38-34, 34-22 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    24 % Connors – 29 of 118
    20 % Lendl – 31 of 152

Connors’ eighth and last major title (fifth in New York – Sampras in 2002 & Federer in 2008 equalled the record). There were weird twists in this final: in the 2nd set Connors had three break points to lead 3:0, then saved a double set point when Lendl was serving at 5:3… Connors [2] started hobbling in the mid-3rd set (injured little right-foot toe), Lendl led 5:3*, then having a set point committed a double fault – Connors won the set and 10 games in a row in total – in the 4th set Lendl [3] began hobbling while Connors regrouped somehow. Prior to the final, Lendl was broken 5 times in six matches, Connors broke him 11 times! The last time in the 8-deuce final game in which Lendl squandered six game points. The American served 19 aces in the tournament, 6 of them in the final, including 3 in one game to lead 3:0 in the 4th set!

Connors’ route to his 100th title:
    1 Ramesh Krishnan 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
    2 Thomas Hogstedt 6-1, 6-2, 6-3
    3 Bruce Manson 6-0, 6-4, 6-0
    4 Heintz Gunthardt 7-5, 6-4, 6-1
    Q Eliot Teltscher 7-6(0), 6-2, 6-2
    S Bill Scanlon 6-2, 6-3, 6-2
    W Ivan Lendl 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-0
