Points won by each set: | 33-28, 38-37, 31-19 |

28 % Gasquet – 26 of 91
When they co-created an intriguing Monte Carlo ’05 semifinal as teenagers, it seemed they would play many more similar matches at the end stages of biggest tournaments. It didn’t happen though, over the years Nadal’s [2] consistency, amazing defence and extreme forehand topspin were too tough to handle for Gasquet who could respond only with beautiful backhand strokes from time to time. When they met on Arthur Ashe Stadium, not many people expected a balanced encounter (Nadal had won 14 straight sets against Gasquet not being threatened once), but the Frenchman [9] was optically better in the 2nd set, he even led 4:3* (40/15) but Nadal saved it quickly with an ace and a service winner, and took the tie-break 7/1. The 3rd set it was waiting for inevitable: Gasquet, having played two five-setters in previous rounds, was very sluggish and finished the contest with two consecutive double faults.
As Gasquet broke Nadal trailing 1:2 in the 2nd set, he snapped Nadal’s streak of 88 consecutive holds (73 at the US Open)
– it initiated at *3:4 in the 2nd set of his semifinal in Cincinnati
Nadal and Gasquet play on the same court also in the third round of the US Open ’22,
and Nadal wins 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 to improve his H2H over the Frenchman to 18-0 (sets won in a row? 34!), the most one-sided H2H in the Open Era
