Points won by each set: | 37-37, 30-15, X, 43-42 |
A 3-hour final, first ATP edition of the Mercedes-Cup, and for the first time since 1984 the final was played in the “best of five” format. The ’84 champion Leconte, lost six years later in the semifinal to Perez-Roldan 7-6, 3-6, 6-7 squandering two match points. Roldan [21] was one of the best clay-courters on the tour in the years 1988-90, thus he was a slight favorite facing the 19-year-old Ivanisevic [24], but the Yugoslav displayed in this match his trademarks: great serving and ability to play well under pressure. Admittedly he squandered a 5:3* lead in the opener, but in the 4th set he came back from *4:5 (0/30) and 5:6 (15/40) – Roldan helped, sending his ground-strokes long on both set points trying to be excessively aggressive. In the tie-break he led 5:4 when Ivanisevic fired an ace. The last two points brought Roldan’s backhand errors, this time he was playing tentatively…
Ivanisevic was raised in Europe, playing mainly on clay, therefore he was the most successful on this surface in the first years on the tour, but at the end of 1991 he improved his serve and became a specialist of faster surfaces. The Stuttgart title arguably remains his most impressive clay-court performance (he would win two more titles on this surface: Bucharest ’93 and Kitzbuhel ’94).
Ivanisevic’s route to his maiden title (39th main-level event):
2 Javier Sanchez 6-2, 6-3
3 Wally Masur 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4
Q Eric Jelen 6-2, 6-3
S Emilio Sanchez 6-4, 6-4
W Guillermo Perez-Roldan 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(5)
Stuttgart on clay it was Ivanisevic’s first tournament following his sensational semifinal on grass at Wimbledon. Thanks to these two events Ivanisevic advanced from no. 38 to 15 and stayed in the Top 20 for another eight years. Three different surfaces in three successive events proved to be too much for the teenager. In his another tournament (New Haven on hard three weeks later) he was defeated by Chamberlin [109] in straight sets. It’s the only win in Chamberlin’s career over a Top 20 player and simultaneously his last victory at the main-level.
