Points won by each set: [ 37-35, 43-36 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
17 % Nadal – 14 of 79
20 % Wawrinka – 15 of 72

Pretty tough match for Rafa [2], who had already established himself as a “king of clay” winning Roland Garros three times (2005-07). Wawrinka [20] led *3:1 in the 1st and 5:2* in the 2nd set (had a couple of game points at 4-all in the 1st set and squandered three mini-set points leading 4:1 in the 2nd set). It was important match in terms of their several future meetings – no matter how close Wawrinka was to win a set, he lost it always… until the Australian Open final 2014. “I played a really good tournament and that has given me a lift after losing at Wimbledon,” Nadal said. “It was the same problem I had at Wimbledon. But once it was taped up the pain subsided a little and I am very happy I decided to carry on.” – added about his sore knee.

Nadal’s route to his 23rd title:
2 Alexander Waske 6-1, 6-1
3 Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-3
Q Juan Monaco 6-1, 6-3
S Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 7-5
W Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5
