Brilliant service performance from 27-year-old Rusedski who was coming back from a bad 2000 year – he needed that entire season to fully recover from a right foot surgery he’d undergone at the end of 1999. In the San Jose final he dispatched Agassi in just 59 minutes, not being taken to ‘deuce’ on his serve even once, snapping Agassi’s 11-match winning streak (14. counting Kooyong Classic). “The way I was thinking and serving out there, I was in command,” Rusedski said. The runner-up stated: “You have to expect him to serve well. Once he gets up a break, you feel he gets the feeling that the finish line is in sight.”
Rusedski’s route to his 10th title:
1 Harel Levy 6-1, 7-6(4)
2 Renzo Furlan 6-3, 6-2
Q Lleyton Hewitt 5-7, 6-1, 6-4
S Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2
W Andre Agassi 6-3, 6-4
