Points won by each set: | 49-44, 33-23, 35-32 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
16 % Medvedev – 18 of 108
16 % Kuerten – 18 of 108
Gloomy & windy day, and the underdog adopted himself much better to the challenging conditions. Admittedly Medvedev [100] wasted break points in three games of the opener (which is a rarity) but without any consequences. He finally broke at 5-all and was controlling the rest of the match afterwards. Kuerten [8] trailed *3:5 (0/30) and 4:5 (15/40) in the 3rd set, but created a break point – Medvedev saved it with a forehand winner and converted his fourth match point with a forehand dropshot. Generally it was an amazing day for him given the winners/errors ratio; he obtained as many as 51% of his points thanks to winners while ~30% is a norm.
