   Their third meeting, and for the third time the lower ranked Argentine leaves the court as a victor. That quarterfinal was conducted in the rain, when Clerc [7] led 2:1 in the 4th set the rain was too heavy to continue, and the match was suspended for 40 minutes. After the resumption Connors led *3:2, at 5-all (30/15) he made a volley mistake from a doable position to lose an opportunity for a double mini-match point. Later on in that game a mini-match point arrived, but the American [2] squandered it. There was 6:5 (30-all) for Clerc as he hit a ball close to the baseline that the linesman called out. But the umpire, Chau Lu, immediately ordered the point replayed, saying the ball had been in. Connors was furious, losing his concentration, and the last eight games. After the 4-hour 26-minute battle Connors faked a handshake with Lu, and the audience said “goodbye” to him with whistles. Clerc’s semifinal had very similar progress to his quarterfinal, but this time he lost being close to win in four sets.
