Points won by each set: | 48-45, 43-38, 46-40 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
28 % Ruud – 36 of 126
24 % Jarry – 33 of 134
A few days before the French Open, they met in the Geneva quarterfinals, and Jarry [35] won 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. I didn’t expect his win in “the best of five” format because he has never won a match 3-2 (record: 0-4), and never before played on Centre Court in a Slam. Ruud [4] plays on the biggest tennis stages quite often lately, and he began the match leading 3:0. Jarry levelled up, but he had to play his best tennis with thin margin of error to keep it competitive. I’d say he deserved to win at least one set, especially the second one when he led 4:1* (40/30). The match lasted 3 hours 20 minutes, Ruud’s longest 3-0 win so far. Jarry was respectively 4, 2 & 2 points away to win each set he lost. At the end of the sets 2 and 3 he lost crucial points on serve after Ruud’s moon-lobs: first netting the ball, then leaving it to be involved in baseline exchange.
