   [15] Gonzalez became the first male tennis player to win a medal in consecutive Olympiads (Athenian bronze medal ’04 in singles & gold in doubles). Gaining the silver in China, he squandered a double set point at 6:5* (40/15) in the 2nd set – volley error (10-stroke rally), forehand error (8 strokes). It was a typical scenario in his “best of five” finals against Federer or Nadal, he was able to play on equal terms against them in one set. “I think I played almost perfect match, no?” said Nadal after the 2-hour 22-minute duel, “It was for a lot of people, not only for me.” The 22-year-old Spaniard advanced to the number 1 in the world for the first time overthrowing Federer, who’d spent 237 weeks in a row on the top… Fully deserved because Nadal had defeated the Swiss in the French Open and Wimbledon finals that year. 2008 it was the first year when it seemed possible that Nadal would win more Slams than Federer, noone expected at the time how Djokovic’s talent would explode three years later.
