Points won by each set: | 41-38, 27-31, 42-36 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
46 % Mensik – 47 of 101
30 % Fritz – 35 of 114
The 19-year-old Mensik [54] was playing his first Masters 1K semifinal against the opponent who gave him a severe lesson in his major debut. Two years ago at the US Open, Fritz outclassed Mensik 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 in the third round, but the Czech was tired after qualifying rounds and possessed a much weaker serve then. This time it was a battle of big-servers, Fritz [4] doesn’t serve as good as Mensik but his forehand is considerably better, thus the match was super tight, and there was only one break of serve (the first game of the 2nd set). Mensik won each tie-break 7/4, in the first of them he struck his best forehand of the day at 4-all to get the mini-break. “The return was tough today,” Mensik said. “We were serving really great today so he didn’t give me an opportunity to break him. It was just the tie-breaks for me that was the decider. I came to show my best performance in the tie-breaks.” Mensik had his lone chance to break as he led 2:1 (40/15) in the decider.
Serve & volley: Mensik 4/5, Fritz 1/1 Average serve speed (1st and 2nd):
Mensik 204 kph and 156 kph,
Fritz 198 kph and 171 kph
