The new venue in Miami, and amazing tournament for the 37-year-old Federer [5] – he struggled in his opening match against much inferior opponent (saved BP at 4-6, 3-all), then won five matches easily, breaking many times three big servers (Medvedev, Anderson, Isner). The script of the final was already written in the 1st game when Isner [9] lost his serve on the third break point and a 6-4 7-6 scoreline hung in the air. Nevertheless the relaxed Federer added another two breaks, and in the 2nd set when a tie-break seemed inevitable, he broke at 5:4 with a challenge off Isner’s potential backhand winner. “It was a dream start, relaxing my nerves [to break in the opening game],” said Federer. “What a week it’s been for me. I’m just so happy right now. It’s unbelievable. I played here in 1999 for the first time and here I am in 2019. It means a lot to me.”

Federer’s route to his 101st title:
2 Radu Albot 4-6, 7-5, 6-3
3 Filip Krajinovic 7-5, 6-3
4 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-2
Q Kevin Anderson 6-0, 6-4
S Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-4
W John Isner 6-1, 6-4

Serve & volley: Federer 0, Isner 0/2
