Points won by each set: [ 47-43, 24-16 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
33 % Becker – 21 of 63
25 % McEnroe – 17 of 67

The first set was pretty strange, in terms of the total number of points (90) it was like a tie-break set. Two very good servers, yet break point opportunities appeared in as many as 7 out of 10 games! McEnroe had a double mini set point at 4:3 – Becker won five games in a row then, and he calmly controlled the final outcome of the 2nd set. “I wanted to be very hot in the beginning, because he usually starts very well,” Becker said. “I played a good first set,” McEnroe said. “I had my chances, but I didn’t capitalize. When I lost that first set, I felt like I lost control of the match.” McEnroe was playing in only his fifth tournament of the year. 31 degrees in the final (89 Fahrenheit).

Becker’s route to his 16th title:
2 Todd Nelson 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2
3 Rick Leach 6-3, 6-4
Q Yahiya Doumbia 6-2, 6-3
S Todd Witsken 6-1, 4-6, 6-4
W John McEnroe 6-4, 6-2
