  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 32-25, 32-22, 32-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    14 % Becker – 13 of 89
    22 % Edberg – 18 of 79

The Davis Cup final. Their first encounter on clay (indoors), and Becker’s surprisingly easy victory because he had lost to Edberg their two previous meetings, and it was tough to expect that clay in Sweden would favor him. Edberg [5] was disconnected from his serve-and-volley game for a longer period of time and broken four times in a row, but it was quite frequent in their matches that they both were unable to serve well at the same time (it’s some sort of mystery in their rivalry). The 2nd set was actually tighter than the scoreline suggests, Becker [4] won all his games by a two-point advantage, being forced to play deuces in three service games. Deciding break in the 3rd set came at 3-all. The West German finished the contest with a spectacular overhead after midnight. Perhaps the first rubber made an impact on them both because Steeb unexpectedly defeated Wilander (even more unexpectedly given the progress of the match), and it set the tone of the second rubber: more pressure on Edberg, Becker without additional pressure. # Nevertheless, Becker was regularly rising his level representing his country, he reminded it the following year as he trashed Edberg (again!) & Wilander in another Germany-Sweden Davis Cup final.

    # Comparison of their back-to-back Davis Cup final meetings (18-8 in games):
    1988 (clay indoors): Becker d. Edberg 6-3, 6-1, 6-4… 2 hours 1 minute… Total points: 96-72
    1989 (carpet indoors): Becker d. Edberg 6-2, 6-2, 6-4… 1 hours 54 minutes… Total points: 93-54
