The 19-year-old Federer , playing his second ATP final, had displayed his tremendous skills that allowed him to be almost invincible in years 2004-07, however, he wasn’t consistent enough over the course of three hours to defeat one of the best indoor specialists at the time. Who knows, maybe the Swiss would have claimed his maiden title if he’d converted a set point in the 3rd set – led 6:5 (40/15) on serve, yet the Swede responded in style, with a forehand return winner & BH-volley winner following a great cross-court backhand return. “I was really lucky to win the third set,” Enqvist said afterwards.
Enqvist’s route to his 18th title:
1 Jan-Michael Gambill 7-6(14), 7-6(5)
2 Jerome Golmard 6-4, 6-2
Q Dominik Hrbaty 4-6, 6-2, 6-3
S Tim Henman 6-1, 6-3
W Roger Federer 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-1
