Points won by each set: | 33-27, 31-27, 33-43, 28-33, 29-21 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
26 % Tsitsipas – 45 of 169
26 % Sinner – 36 of 136
One year after their quarterfinal, another encounter on Rod Laver Arena in night session, this time one round earlier. Sinner [16] has improved the serve over the year, and it caused Tsitsipas [4] to dig deeper. Admittedly the first two sets were almost identical by the scoreline, but in both there was 4-all while a year before the Greek obtained breaks at the beginning of sets and controlled the rest. Sinner had defeated Fucsovics in the previous round losing the first two sets ‘4-6 4-6′, so he hoped to emulate. In the 5th set he was surprised by Tsitsipas’ improvement in the service department. After the match the Greek told Courier that he relaxed his arm and it allowed him to get more free points. The deciding break came as he led 3:2… already at 2:1 he had 40/0 which evaporated quite quickly. # Tsitsipas won a similar match at the same stage a year before, then he needed the crucial break at 4-all in the decider. Sinner still without a Slam semifinal which is quite surprising given his first quarterfinal in 2020.
Serve & volley: Tsitsipas 1/4, Sinner 0
# Comparison of similar 5-setters of the Greek in his back-to-back AO 4th rounds: 2022: Tsitsipas d.
