Amazing H2H between Kohlschreiber and Soderling

Today in Rotterdam, Philipp Kohlschreiber [36] was only one point of making a historical H2H with Robin Soderling [4]. They played for the third time against each other a tie-break of the 3rd set. In their both previous matches of this kind, Kohlschreiber was w winner after saving two match points, today saved a double match point and held a match point at 7:6 on Soderling’s second serve! The Swede managed to keep his concentration and saved it with a forehand winner, then won another two points and the match! Earlier in the set, the German led *3:1 (40/30)… Stats of the match
The only cases at the main level in which one player beat the other one three times in the 3rd set tie-break occurred in five rivalries:
– Stefan Edberg vs. Jakob Hlasek (1990-92),
– Goran Ivanisevic vs. Richard Krajicek (1995-97),
– Jan-Michael Gambill vs. Wayne Arthurs (2001-02),
– Juan C. Ferrero vs. Felix Mantilla (2000-02) and
– Roger Federer vs. Ivan Ljubicic (2000-05).
Kohlschreiber was today one point not only from equaling this intriguing record, but also one point from being the first man who did it saving a match point three times in the final set tie-break! Below three “tie-break” matches between Kohlschreiber and Soderling, more interesting – each of them on a different surface, separated by three years from the other one.

No, I don’t know but thanks for the reminder, maybe I should add their H2H to the next edition of my eBook at the end of 2011 if they hold the record 🙂
