Points won by each set: | 49-51, 43-42, 28-23, 23-30, 28-14 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
43 % Sampras – 67 of 155
46 % Ivanisevic – 82 of 176
Sampras had break points in three different games of the 1st set, he didn’t serve an ace in that set! He needed 8 service games and the tie-break to finally hit the first one – when he had done it, it was followed by another two aces. In the 2nd set, he saved two set points in the tie-break (5:6 & 7:8) – both with service winners off the second serves. From 2-all in the 5th, Sampras won 16 out of the last 19 points. Ivanisevic had played a crazy semi-final against Krajicek, and mental tiredness of repeating the same over and over again (big serving, and hitting volleys from time to time) finally wore him down. Reminiscence of their Wimbledon match three years before.
Sampras’ route to his 55th title:
1 Dominik Hrbaty 6-3, 6-3, 6-2
2 Mikael Tillstrom 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(5)
3 Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-6(3)
4 Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Q Mark Philippoussis 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4
S Tim Henman 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3
W Goran Ivanisevic 6-7(2), 7-6(9), 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
